Lake Murray Kayak, Canoe & Kayak Fishing Information
Lake Murray is located within the boundary of Mission Trails Regional Park, which lies between the city of San Diego and the neighboring communities of La Mesa and Santee. Lake Murray is a popular year-round destination for outdoor family fun. It is the perfect destination for anyone who enjoys soaking up breathtaking views, kayaking, hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities. There is also a nice picnic area with barbecues and picnic tables located around the lake.
NOTE: Lake Murray is infested with quagga mussels.
Fishing is allowed yearround from sunrise to sunset. Lake Murray has Florida-strain largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black crappie and trout stocked from November through May.
The minimum size limit for bass is 12 inches. Fish limits are five bass, five trout, five catfish and 25 crappie and bluegill in aggregate, with no limit on other species. Fishing permits are available at the concession and ranger pay stations. You must be have a California State Fishing license, if you are 16 years of age or older.
Open: The lake is open for shore fishing and private boats (when water level allows) seven days a week. There are small boat and kayak rentals available. Lake Murray is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. The park surrounding the lake is open seven days a week from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset for recreational use. The gates are open from 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during Daylight Savings Time and 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. when Daylight Savings Time is not in effect. The picnic area and perimeter road are open seven days a week . The boat speed limit is 5 m.p.h
Fees: There is a fee to camp, for day use and to launch. Permits can be purchased from iron ranger pay stations around the lake or from the electronic pay station by the concession building. You need to bring exact change for the iron ranger. The electronic pay station at Lake Murray Reservoir is out of order and patrons will have to use the iron ranger envelopes on days or times that the concession is closed. Please bring exact change for purchase of permits. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause patrons.
Lake Facilities: Lake Murray is a popular destination for bicycling, jogging, and walking along the three mile long paved trail that leads to the dam and back. Alcohol is prohibited in the park at any time. Leashed dogs are allowed fifty feet away from the water, but are not permitted on any boats. Rowboats, motorboats, pedal boats and canoes are available for rent hourly or daily for fishing and recreational boating.
No swimming, SUP or water contact is allowed. Ground fires, glass containers and camping are not allowed at the park. Concession services offering bait, tackle, fishing licenses, food and drinks, are available Wednesday through Sunday, (closed Monday and Tuesday). On Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday the concession is open sunrise to sunset. On Thursday and Friday it is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
