Just north of Mammoth Lakes, in the
Inyo National Forest, lies this small, crystal clear
blue-water alpine lake. Special features of this
sparkling cold-water lake are its breathtaking
setting encircled by massive snow-capped mountain
peaks. Silver Lake is one of the four lakes located
on the June Lake Loop. The lake offers calm water
throughout the day due to the minimal disruption
from the boat traffic and a 5 m.p.h. boat speed
limit. This lake is ideal for novice paddlers who
enjoy a short leisurely paddle. Some campsites
provide a shaded, somewhat private beach with a
gentle slope, nice for mooring a boat or relaxing in
Silver Lake has been known to produce
trophy-size rainbow, brown and alpers trout. It is
another superb kayak angling destination in the June
Lake Loop because it has a little of everything; jaw
dropping scenery, and trophy size rainbow trout to
name a couple. The lake receives weekly rainbow
trout plants totally up to 48,000 rainbows in the 10
to 12 inch range, and 10,000 cutthroat fingerlings
per year, by the Department of Fish and Game.
Terrain: Silver Lake offers sweeping panoramic
views of majestic mountains. The colorful
surrounding topography is surrounded by tall
aromatic pines and a dense colorful undergrowth.
Silver Lake is the prettiest lake in the June Lake
Silver Lake, home to superb kayak fishing and
several trail heads connecting to the Ansel Adams
Wilderness, Yosemite, Pacific Crest Trail and John
Muir Trail. You'll often see kayak anglers fishing
where Rush Creek enters the lake and around the
little islands at the south end.and along the
Located in California's Eastern Sierra Nevada
Mountains, Silver Lake is one of four lakes along
June Lake Loop. The loop is actually California
State Route 158 which leaves U.S. Highway 395, loops
16 miles around a canyon and returns to Highway 395.
Open: Silver Lake is open daily for kayaking the
last weekend in April until
hour before sunrise to sunset, weather permitting.
There is a 5 m.p.h. boat speed limit.
Fees: There is a fee to camp and for pets but no
day use or launch fees.
Lake Facilities: There are 75 RV sites with flush
toilets, water, showers, hookups, a boat launch, a
general store, boat rentals, swimming, hiking and
bicycling trails. Pets are permitted on a leash.
