The lake is stocked with rainbow trout by the California Department of Fish and Game. Alpers Trophy trout are also stocked every other week during the peak season, and are guaranteed to put a bend in even the sturdiest rod. In addition, South Lake has benefited from past rearing programs for Brown Trout, and its depths contain some of the largest Browns in the Sierra.
