The Utica Reservoir feeds to Union Reservoir located just south of Utica Reservoir.  Utica and Union Reservoirs are small, picturesque reservoirs located off the Spicer Reservoir Road, about two miles off of Highway 4, near Bear Valley.

One thing Utica Reservoir has is an abundance of outstanding scenery – and people. If you’re looking for peace and relaxation, Utica Reservoir delivers on weekdays. Both Union and Utica Reservoirs are crowded in the summertime, especially on weekends. If you can choose a midweek day or off-season time to visit, the experience is more intimate.

Utica Reservoir is a paddling paradise (no powerboats allowed). The reservoir is small and can be easily paddled in a couple of hours, but it takes days to actually explore the seemingly endless hidden passages, breathtaking landscapes, colorful lily ponds, beautiful babbling brooks and secluded coves.  Large rock islands protrude out of the water for as far as the eye can see, make this a unique paddling experience.  Lake Alpine, Union Reservoir and Spicer Meadow Reservoir, are all  just a few minute drive away, offer fishing and other water activities.

This little gem is home to several small islands which provide shaded picnic spots, along a rocky wooded shoreline. . Much of the reservoir shore is lined with pine and granite boulders, adding an air of tranquility to tkayaking utica reservoirhe reservoir. Being forest service land, camping is allowed most any place that is not marked as “no camping”.

Primitive camping is allowed at several of the islands for those planning on a boat-in adventure. Utica Reservoir allows dispersed lakeside camping.  Camping is on a first-come, first-served basis and do not requre a camping permit, but you do  need a fire permit if you are going to make a fire.

For the two designated campgrounds, you need to fill out an envelope with your arrival and departure dates, along with additional information, then put the payment inside the envelope, and then put the envelope in a secure drop box after you tear off the proof of payment stub. The stub gets attached to the campsite pole saying that the site is paid for for the days you will be camping. Rocky Point has 12 walk-in sites, and Sandy Flat has 11 walk-in sites. The developed camping sites are by the vault toilets.

Primitive camping is allowed on several  of the islands for those planning on a boat-in adventure. Free boat-in camping is available all around the lake and on the islands.

Utica Reservoir is the perfect spot to explore this scenic area. Camping and paddling at Utica Reservoir are not available in winter. The paddling season is typically, during the summer through early fall, unless there is an unusual mild winter and spring. The area receives an abundance of snow in the wintertime. The reservoir access road is usually open June through October which is accessible by two wheel vehicles but it is a little rough in a few areas.
