Water levels fluctuate, dropping from mid-July to eptember as water is drawn fo irrigation. Lake Berryessa’s warm summertime water temperatures and gusty winds attract many jet and waterskiing, windsurfing and sailing enthusiasts, but the lake is so large you scarcely notice them.

To further enjoy the blue skies and sparkling waters, visit one of the lake's day use parks. Oak Shores and Smittle Creek, maintained by the Bureau of Reclamation, offer picnicking with charcoal grills, swimming, non-motorized biking, and boat mooring. There are also several reserves around the lake, all of which offer opportunities to learn about the local flora and fauna, while experiencing them firsthand. The Bureau also operates a free boat launch at Capell Cove on the northwest shore of Lake Berryessa. Plan to arrive early on busy summer weekends, since trailer parking is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Lake Berryessa Wildlife Area features 2000 acres of annual grasslands and blue oak woodlands owned by the U/S. Bureau of Reclamation, and managed by the Department of Fish and Game. The narrow portion of the reservoir, nearest the Monticello Dam, is referred to as the "Narrows," and is busy with boaters on holidays and weekends.

There are several resorts with marinas at the lake, as well as camping facility nearby at Lake Solano County Park, located west of Winters, California. There are swimming areas closed to boats and other watercraft, as well as several hiking trails.

If swimming and hiking isn't your idea of fun, the lake also lends itself to waterskiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, or any other water sport you can think of.
