Lake Wohlford lies nestled in the foothills of San Diego’s North County, above Escondido, approximately one hour north of San Diego. The lake, surrounded by oaks, sycamores and cottonwood trees, provides a peaceful paddle. Its natural beauty and small size make Lake Wohlford an ideal destination for novice kayakers. The next time you head over to Escondido, be sure to plan a visit here.

The best way to enjoy Lake Wohlford’s gorgeous terrain is from the water. Unfortunately, there is a temporary ban on launching all private watercraft, in order to protect Lake Wohlford from becoming infested with invasive quagga mussels. The ban includes fish finders and other equipment that might have come in contact with quagga mussel infested water at other lakes in the vicinity. Before departing, contact the park ranger at Ph: 760 839-4346 to see if they have lifted the ban on private watercraft if you are planning on kayaking here.

Until they do, it is a nice place to have a picnic and to fish. There’s probably no better place to fish one of San Diego County’s lakes than Lake Wohlford. Nothing can compare when trout are biting, sneaking up on them in a kayak. With 146 acres of water packed with trout, largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish, this destination is a haven for kayak anglers. Don’t worry if you don’t have a kayak, there’s plenty of shoreline access to fish from. A State of California fishing license is required for all persons 16 years of age and older.
